Bird Dog Mailbox

This is without a doubt my favorite mailbox in the neighborhood. I’m sure you can see why.

Every time I walk past the mailbox, it reminds me of Becky — one of the inspirations for the Down Girl and Sit stories.

Becky was a purebred English Setter — a hunting dog that was just too gun-shy to hunt. After a full year of training, it was apparent that she did not need to continue her studies at hunting school. So she flunked out and came to live with me.

Becky actually had strong hunting instincts, but they were much better suited to a suburban back yard, where she could chase squirrels to her heart’s content.

Becky was the sweetest dog that ever lived.

I still miss her.
