The palmetto tree is the most recognizable symbol of The Palmetto State. Together with a crescent moon (which is really a gorget from a state militia uniform), our beloved palmetto tree is everywhere — most notably on the South Carolina state flag.
I’ve written at length (some might even say ad nauseum) about our palmetto tree mailboxes. But I’ve never actually written about the palmetto flags that inspired them. So let me do that now, before I write another post about the many ways we are obsessed with these trees.
We have plenty of palmetto flags here in the neighborhood for you to enjoy — both the official ones and the purely decorative. We’re proud of them all.
